Could Stephen Colbert’s Christmas Musical Suck?

Let’s hope not. The righteously titled one-hour special "A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All!" airs on November 21, but it’s going to take that long to feel right about yet another Toby Keith appearance on the metafictional comedy. I’m not sure whether Colbert actually likes him, or whether he’s just cool with the ironic get, but it’s hard to believe there weren’t other worthy candidates for the holiday weirdness.

Thankfully, the pro-war Keith will be joined by more level-headed talents like John Legend, Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, Feist and Jon Stewart, who will reportedly sing an original Hanukkah tune with Colbert called, wait for it, "Hanukkah." So far, so funny.

But Keith? Really? Again? Colbert has been a beast when it comes to music, handing off his stage to Rush, The Roots, The Apples in Stereo, R.E.M. and more. And considering that few are disputing that he is the king of comedy these days, one assumes he could have landed anyone he wanted. So why did he want Keith?

Perhaps, but probably not, because Keith was the subject of H.Res. 1255, authored by Tom Cole (R-OK) and reportedly considered on the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday. The resolution is rather simple; it "honors Toby Keith’s commitment to our country’s Armed Forces overseas" and "encourages other entertainers to take into consideration Toby Keith’s deep commitment to boosting the morale of our Nation’s Armed Forces when supporting USO operations."

Some people just have too much time to kill.

Whats So Funny Bout Peace, Love & Understanding – Elvis CostelloNo, Colbert probably decided to honor Jesus by playing the peacemaker. According to Comedy Central Insider, Toby Keith and Colbert will join the other musical guests in a cover of Costello’s pacifist hit "(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding." A nice sentiment, to be sure, but last we heard from Keith he was more interested in putting a boot up someone’s ass, without really caring who it was.

What’s so funny, indeed.
